Paying your rent
When you sign your tenancy agreement and before you move into your new home, we’ll talk to you about how you’re going to make your rent payments and help you to plan a budget.
Your rent is due in advance and it’s important that you pay it on time. Failing to do so may put your tenancy at risk.
We’re here to help – our Housing team can offer you advice to get you back on track. If you’re struggling to pay your rent, please let us know as soon as you can. We can talk through your options and come to a solution together.

How we can support you
Our Housing team can offer practical advice and support, including:
- Helping you check and apply for benefits you may be entitled to.
- Support with budgeting and managing household bills.
- Agreeing an affordable repayment plan to help get your payments back on track.
- Connecting you with trusted organisations that provide financial advice.
We want to work with you to find solutions that are realistic and manageable.
Here are some examples of how we can support you. We have changed the names for anonymity.
Help with Universal Credit
Fatima’s Universal Credit payments stopped after she received incorrect advice from a community organisation, which quickly led to rent arrears. When she contacted Local Space, we helped her to raise a complaint which meant she was offered compensation for receiving incorrect advice. We also worked with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to extend the backdating of her Universal Credit claim.
We have strong working relationships with the DWP and experience supporting residents with benefits issues. If something doesn’t seem right with your Universal Credit, we can help you investigate.
Support after a bereavement
After a bereavement in his family, Eric found it difficult to keep up with his rent. At first, he didn’t feel able to talk to anyone about what he was going through, so we were unaware of the situation. Once we understood what had happened, we helped him access family support through the council, arranged an affordable repayment plan and provided a £500 grant from our hardship fund.
Life events can affect anyone’s finances. Letting us know early gives us the best chance to support you before problems escalate.
