Black History Month 2025

Today marks the start of Black History Month, which takes place every October and gives everyone the opportunity to share, celebrate and understand the impact of black heritage and culture.

This month is for everyone, no matter your background, to learn about and appreciate black history, helping us understand the importance of diversity, representation and inclusion in shaping a more just society.

What is this year’s theme?

The theme for Black History Month 2025 is Standing Firm in Power and Pride and pays tribute to the resilience, strength, and progress of the black community across the world.

It’s about:

  • Honouring the contributions of black leaders, pioneers, and activists.
  • Embracing power and pride as core values.
  • Taking action to ensure black voices are heard, valued, and celebrated.

Black History Month isn’t just about remembrance – it’s a call to keep breaking barriers, building unity, and moving forward together.

Why is Black History Month important?

We spoke to Josie Parsons, Local Space’s Chief Executive, to hear what Black History Month means to her this year.

“At Local Space, we are proud to celebrate Black History Month 2025 under the theme ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride.’ Our goal has always been to create welcoming spaces where people from all backgrounds can thrive, connect, and bring their full selves. In a time when negative narratives about immigration are rising, it is more important than ever to reflect on the contributions of black communities to London and beyond.”

“This month, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering an environment where diversity is celebrated, staff voices are heard, and everyone can stand proudly in their identity. Together, we continue to build a Local Space that champions unity, respect, and the power of community.”

“We’re looking forward to honouring and celebrating black visionaries by encouraging our staff to attend our internal events, engage with our resource hub, and attend external events that will be reimbursed by Local Space.”
